OzByBike is a demonstration of how sustainable transport can be used as an alternative to polluting and costly ways of getting around. On the 11th February 2006, Anthony Mann set off on his 27,000 km expedition around and throughout Australia to spread his message: that travelling like this is one of the healthiest, most environmentally-friendly and sustainable forms of transport that exists... and it's not as hard as you think!
OzByBike has a series of 7 'extreme goals' to achieve whilst the expedition travels the country: the most southern, eastern, northern, western and central points of Australia, as well as the highest and lowest points, from summit to below sea level. The expedition will travel over 6,000 kms on unsealed roads, and pass through all Australian capital cities, taking 18 months to complete and finishing back in Hobart on the 22nd August, 2007.
Travelling with Anthony throughout the expedition will be his trusty team of garden gnomes - the first ceramic cyclists ever to pedal around Australia. Watch out for them as OzByBike travels around the country, and be sure to say g'day - and offer a cold beer if you see them passing by!
You can follow Anthony as he travels around the country, by keeping an eye on the DIARY page - where you'll find all the latest photos and stories (note: due to long periods in isolated areas, weekly diary updates may not be possible - good things come to those who wait!) . You can also be involved in OzByBike - click here to find out how.
